Frequently asked questions
What does SISU mean?
SISU “SEE-soo” is a Finnish word variously translated as stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience and hardiness. In Finnish culture, sisu is seen as a core characteristic that enables individuals to push forward through difficult circumstances with quiet resolve and without giving up. It’s not just about momentary strength but an enduring quality of character.
What is contrast therapy?
Contrast therapy is a wellness practice that alternates between hot and cold exposure, often using a sauna and a cold plunge. This technique leverages the physiological effects of temperature extremes to promote various health benefits. Here in the US sauna and cold plunging is a fairly new practice. Contrast therapy using a sauna and cold plunge has been around for centuries, particularly in colder climates.
What does SISU sauna and cold plunge offer?
SISU Sauna and Cold Plunge offers one hour sessions of contrast therapy. We have two session rooms. Each session room has a traditional sauna, cold plunge, bucket shower (to rinse prior to entering the cold plunge), an area to warm up naturally, and a reverse Osmosis water dispenser. Towels, showers, changing areas, and lockers are available to all clients.
What should I expect when I arrive at SISU Sauna and Cold Plunge?
As you arrive you will be greeted by a member of our team. The team will give you a tour of your session room, explain the SISU session process, and answer any questions you might have.
What do I bring for my SISU Session?
Your bathing suit is the only necessary item to bring. We provide towels, water, and locks for the lockers.
What should I drink before, during, and after my session?
Hydration is very important key to having a successful contrast therapy session.
Before: water and electrolyte drinks
During: water, herbal tea, and electrolyte drinks
After: water, electrolyte drinks, coconut water, and herbal teas
We currently offer reverse osmosis filtered hot/cold water with 3 herbal teas.
General tips: drink water throughout the day, not just around your session. Avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol.
How many people are in a SISU session?
Up to 6 people can book a session online. The 6 people might be complete strangers, a few might have come in together, or perhaps you get the session to yourself. Some memberships offer bringing in a friend for free, this might make the session size larger than 6. For group sessions, you can book up to 10 people in 1 session. A group more than 10 people reserves both session rooms for a 90 minute period.
How hot and cold are the saunas and cold plunges?
We like to keep the saunas at about 180°, while using the saunas please hurry in and out to keep the heat from escaping. Adding water to the rocks is also an option, this is called “löyly”. Please check with others in session before adding water. We have two cold plunges, one at 40° in the sun room and the other at 50° in the moon room.
Do you offer group SISU sessions?
Yes, you must call to book for a group session. Pricing is listed on the ‘Memberships’ page. You can book up to 10 people in 1 session. If you need more than 10 people, you have both rooms for your group for a 90 minute session.
Why do you have Reverse Osmosis Water system?
The RO water systems are among the best-filtered water options for many uses. This type of water filtration system removes contaminants such as lead, arsenic, nitrates, fluoride, chlorine and more. Water is forced through a membrane removing 99% of dissolved salts, heavy metals, and other impurities.
